NEWS AND EVENTS

Earthsong Lodge achieves Enviro-Gold Award

Earthsong Lodge owners/operators, Trevor and Carol Rendle, were thrilled to be awarded Enviro-Gold by Qualmark, meeting the highest level of environmental practices and social responsibility.

Originally launched in 2008, Qualmark Green New Zealand tourism’s official environmental award, measures tourism operators’ effectiveness in energy efficiency, waste management and water conservation, with community activities and conservation initiatives also considered under Qualmark’s environmental criteria.

All businesses carrying the Qualmark logo must meet standards for environmental practices with the Enviro-Gold award recognizing top performers in this area.

We are extremely pleased that Qualmark has recognised our achievements in sustainable tourism with this Enviro-Gold award. Great Barrier Island is a unique destination without reticulated utilities such as electricity, gas, and water supply.”

We designed Earthsong with the environment in mind. Solar panels for accessing the sun’s power, solar water heating and a self contained waste water treatment plant - the design and straw-bale construction of the Lodge itself reflects our commitment to a sustainable environment.

Visitors are increasingly looking at the environmental impact their holidays have, so guests can stay at Earthsong Lodge with confidence that we are making a meaningful effort.

Earthsong Charity Winemakers Dinner hailed a great success

Earthsong Lodge hosted 2 Charity Winemakers Dinners in October and raised an impressive $2254 for the new ambulance service on Great Barrier Island.

Over two magical evenings fine wines from the Matua Valley cellars were tasted, talked about and savoured while Trevor and the Earthsong kitchen team delighted all with a sensory journey of seasonal and exotic fare.

The Earthsong Charity Winemakers Dinner became the talk of the 'Barrier' over the following days and featured on the front page of the island newspaper 'Barrier Bulletin'.

Earthsong hosts, Trevor and Carol are grateful for the generous support of Matua Valley Wines and dining guests, who all contributed to this worthy cause. The Great Barrier Island Community Health Trust ambulance Fund with a target of $5000 to raise, were overwhelmed by the great start this has given them.

We are planning further dining adventures at Earthsong so just click here and we will add you to the invitation list.

Earthsong Celebrates Best Ever Olive Harvest

“How are we going to pick them all?” I asked Trevor early on April Fool’s Day

In ancient Greece they knew what they were doing and used slaves but at Earthsong there were plenty of friends keen to volunteer for the olive harvest of 2010.

The long summer of sun and gentle sea breezes had worked its magic in the Earthsong olive grove. The result produced long drooping branches laden with ripening olives. All we had to do was pluck these fat oil-laden fruits from the 80 olive trees clinging to a sun-scorched hillside in Tryphena.

The Albany Olive Oil Press required 90 kilograms for their traditional hydraulic stone press and so on a glorious morning early this April we donned hats and strapped on buckets and set to the task of relieving the Earthsong olive grove of its bounty.

2 days produced skilled olive pickers and yielded the awesome sight of 120 kilograms of ripe olives all handpicked and with a short scenic flight to Dairy Flat our precious crop was whisked away to be pressed. Aching muscles were soothed and thirsts quenched as glasses of wine and beer assisted the sun towards the horizon and we waxed lyrically on the many qualities of living on this untamed island where nature allows such miracles.

The two harvests yielded 25 litres of green-gold olive oil of an exceptional quality that has impressed the folk at the olive press - “the best olive oil they have seen yet”. “We are thrilled” said Carol Rendle, co-owner of the Earthsong olive grove “and humbled by the rewarding crop nature has bestowed on us this year and we are excited and very proud of our olive oil. Our vision now is for Great Barrier Island to develop its own olive oil co-operative with an olive press right here.”

7777 was the lucky number for the Starship Foundation...

and for the person who won the bid for a fly-in lunch at Great Barrier Island’s Earthsong Lodge

Earthsong’s gift of a dining experience for two people, along with donated scenic flights to Great Barrier Island, raised a whopping $7777 at the Starship Foundation’s Supernova Swing charity fundraiser event in September – the highest selling item in Supernova’s silent auction on the night.

“The amount raised will make a real difference for the kids at Starship and is a huge compliment to Earthsong Lodge,” says Trevor Rendle, chef and owner of Earthsong Lodge. “I’ll be creating something very special for the generous bidder who put such a high value on this Great Barrier Island experience.”

Earthsong Lodge is committed to supporting its local community and to environmental sustainability.
